Who can claim a Trump Account: parent, guardian, sibling or grandparent?
Claiming an auto-opened account
An "authorized individual" claims the account in the app by verifying identity and authority to manage the child's account (IRS: Trump Accounts). Invest America describes activation as done by a parent or guardian with an SSN or ITIN (>Invest America).
Opening only (no $1,000 election)
The authorized individual is a legal guardian, parent, adult sibling, or grandparent, in that order of priority. If no one higher in the order is available, the next can act; for example, with no legal guardian either parent can elect, regardless of filing status (IRS: Instructions for Form 4547).
Opening and electing the $1,000
The person must anticipate the child will be their qualifying child for the year (IRS: Instructions for Form 4547).
The responsible party
Whoever is listed in Part I becomes the responsible party while the child is a minor. They can choose among eligible investments, request certain rollovers, and name a successor (IRS: Instructions for Form 4547).
