Form 4547 explained: how to fill it out, part by part
Is Form 4547 legitimate?
Yes. It is an official IRS form used to request an account for a child who does not have one, and to request the $1,000 contribution (IRS: Trump Accounts FAQ, IRS: About Form 4547). If your child was auto-enrolled, you do not need it just to open the account; you still need it (or the app) to elect the $1,000 (IRS: Trump Accounts FAQ).
Ways to submit
- Trump Accounts app or website, or your IRS Individual Online Account (IRS: Trump Accounts FAQ)
- With your tax return using tax software, or on paper. Paper forms go to the address at IRS.gov/PaperReturns for your return type ("requesting a refund or not enclosing a check") (IRS: Instructions for Form 4547)
Part by part (IRS: Instructions for Form 4547)
| Part | What goes there | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| I: Your information | Name, address, SSN of the parent/guardian or other authorized individual | If your name changed (marriage, divorce), report it to SSA before filing |
| II: Child's information | Child's name, SSN, relationship, address | Name and SSN must match the child's Social Security card. Line 6: check if you are authorized to open the account. More than two children: attach extra copies |
| III: Pilot election (line 7) | Check for each eligible child who should get the $1,000 | Only children born 2025-2028 who meet the rules |
| IV: Consent | Authorizes IRS, Treasury and agents to create the account and share status | Required |
| Signature | Sign and date | Paper forms need a handwritten signature; typed or digital ones are not valid on paper |
Do not
- Attach Form 4547 to a Form 1040-X or amend your return to add it (IRS: Instructions for Form 4547, IRS: Trump Accounts FAQ).
