Trump Account scams: fake texts and how to spot them
Rules of thumb
- Claiming is free. The official routes are the Trump Accounts app (Apple App Store / Google Play), the Trump Accounts website, and your IRS Online Account (IRS: Trump Accounts FAQ). No fee, no "processing agent".
- The IRS does not start contact by text or social media to ask for personal or financial information (IRS: Recognize tax scams).
- Treasury does mail letters to families whose child may qualify for the $1,000 (IRS: Trump Accounts FAQ). Check any letter against irs.gov rather than calling numbers in a text.
- The only official help line listed by the IRS is 866-USA-4547 (IRS: Trump Accounts FAQ).
- Don't tap links in texts promising to "release" or "unlock" a deposit. Type trumpaccounts.gov or irs.gov yourself.
Report it
- Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM), and report IRS impersonation via IRS: Report phishing.
Unconfirmed: We found no IRS page specific to Trump Account scam texts. These are general IRS anti-scam rules.
